Invisible Cities

"...these works came about from observations of a busy street in Connaught Place in Delhi, made on various times and days, but starting with a few dusty afternoons in July.

What I saw before me in the bright light served as a physical reference of course, but also as points of irreverence and departure; as strongly felt subjective projections. Reviews have commented on the hallucinatory nature of these landscapes, and reference to magical realities. But I just painted what I saw.

Memories and desires have played a part; as well as the effects of standing for hours under the summer sun!"

...The journey is dull grey, same as the city. My fellow vehicles threaten to mutilate my car, and announce their presence by honking. I wish they'd stop and maybe spread symphonies instead. Not too loud just soothing. And while they are at it, spout golden flowers instead of black smoke. And fly. Like birds and butterflies. I wish for fruits to grow on Delhi trees. I wish for time to think of such things.

The light is green and the race continues. We break laws in creative ways, striving for inches.

Anyway, back to the reason behind this note. I saw a child today in front of the metro station. He had a mobile device with him- isn't four too young for an iPhone? He seemed engrossed in a game, or perhaps in taking a photo of the enormous pink flowers that emerged from the top of the building. He likes pink.

I wanted to tell him to look up for a while. Tell him that chasing butterflies can be as fun an activity as Pac-man. But I didn't. He is an active kid, like most his age. I think he would have done it on his own had any of it been real. Are there orange butterflies left in my city? Dreams are underrated. They don't get you frequent flier miles but they are still quite good to have.
